CARSON, Calif. (ABC4 Sports) - After battling to a scoreless draw for the first 60 minutes, L.A. Galaxy international superstar Zlatan Ibrahimovic scored two goals in six minutes, as the Galaxy ended Real Salt Lake's 3-game winning streak, 3-0.
RSL falls to 7-7-1 headed into a 2-week international World Cup break.
"Nothing broke down defensively until the third goal to be quite honest with you," said head coach Mike Petke. "We worked on three specific things in training this week and talked about them religiously and one of the main ones was Ibrahimovic can be quite for 80 percent of the game and he gets his opportunities.
In an even first half, RSL outshot the Galaxy 4-3, with both teams putting one shot on frame. In the 42nd minute Nick Rimando thwarted an effort from LA midfielder Perry Kitchen. Just before the conclusion of the first half RSL forward Corey Baird had his header saved by David Bingham.
The second half saw two goals from Ibrahimovic in quick succession as he made two opportunistic plays to make the difference for the Galaxy. On the first, Chris Pontius put a ball in the box from the right side and Rimando came out to punch it clear, but misplayed it and Ibrahimovic leaped for a header into the open net to make it 1-0 in the 61st minute.
Then in the 67th minute, Servando Carrasco served a ball into the box and Ibrahimovic got positioning on defender Justen Glad to put a second header into the net for a 2-0 lead for LA.
"It's Ibra," said RSL defender Justen Glad. "He's good in the air, he creates things, he can shoot from distance, he's a big body, he's got a lot of qualities about him obviously and he causes problems in a lot of different ways."
Ola Kamara would later add a third goal and RSL left StubHub Center with a 3-0 defeat.
"I think our possession was good, our movement was good, playing out of the back was good," Petke said. "We created a lot of chances I think in the first half, got behind their defense and unlucky not to put one of those away but I think playing away the mentality was good and the second half we could all do a little bit better. There is a lot I think that was good in that game."
