Mother's boyfriend charged with toddler's murder

CEDAR CITY (News4Utah) – Charges have been filed in connection with the death of a Cedar City toddler. Police said a 2-year-old boy was murdered and the mother’s boyfriend is to blame.

According to charging documents, Gavin Michael Haar was taking care of the boy at a home on South Sunset Drive while his mother was at work back in June.

Sometime during that period, the documents state the boy received a laceration to his abdomen which caused him to bleed out and die.

After an investigation, Haar was charged with murder and child abuse.

The Iron County Attorney said the boy’s mother is charged with obstruction of justice in relation to the case.

"Well, she was charged with obstructing justice and two counts of child abuse. The theory is that she was not truthful in some of her responses about what had happened," said Scott Garrett, Iron County Attorney.

A warrant for Haar's arrest was issued Thursday. Later that evening Haar was taken into custody by Snohomish County Sheriff's Office in Washington state.
