MURRAY, Utah (ABC4 News) A 31-year-old devoted husband and father from Utah who collapsed during police academy training in Texas in November has died, leaving behind a pregnant wife, a 2-year-old daughter and devastated family here in Utah.
Christopher Murray's wife Hailey told WFAA ABC 8 reporter Lauren Zakalik that her husband's dream was to become a police officer. He achieved that goal by completing all the requirements as a cadet at the Denton Police Academy but collapsed during one of the last training exercises, just two days before he was set to graduate.
"Ever since I've known him, he's just had this ability to help people," Hailey Murray said. "He loved to serve others."
Hailey said her husband was doing a physical test that is about 10 minutes long and very strenuous when he suddenly collapsed. Doctors later said Chris had suffered from rhabdomyolysis, a rare muscle disease that can damage the kidneys.
Chris was taken to Denton Regional Medical Center where he spent two weeks under the watch of doctors, and his fellow officers, but died Thursday, surrounded by his family.
For the last four years, Chris has worked as a 911 dispatcher and was recently recognized for his role in helping a 10-year-old boy save his mother’s life.
Born in Salt Lake City to Dick and Jody Murray, Chris graduated from Murray High School in 2003 and served a two year mission in Tacoma, Washington.
Hailey and Chris were married in Rexburg, Idaho in 2008 and welcome their daughter Lorelei in 2014. Hailey was due to give birth to their son Kaz in January.
In addition to his wife Hailey, his daughter Lorelei and unborn son Kaz of Fort Worth, Texas, Chirs leaves behind his mother and stepfather Frank and Jody Murray Luthi, two sisters, Jamie Ulibarri and Kathy Ancell, a brother Derrick Murray, eight nephews and two nieces, all of Utah.
Chris's obituary says he is preceded in death by his father Dick Murray.
A viewing is scheduled in Texas for Monday December 5. Chris funeral will be held in Newdale, Idaho on December 10. For more information on Chris's services you can read his full obituary here.
