SLCC offers an alternative to costly textbooks

Salt Lake Community College (SLCC) is offering an alternative to costly textbooks.

OER (Open Educational Resources) are free or low-cost, high-quality resources for teaching and learning. They reside in the public domain or have been released under an intellectual property license that permits their free use and repurposing by others. OER include full courses, course materials, modules, textbooks, streaming videos, tests, software and any other tools, materials, or techniques used to support access to knowledge.

Students save an average of $100 per course.

SLCC officials say the plan is making the difference between some students either being able to attend college or dropping out because of the traditionally expensive price of a higher education made worse by costly textbooks.

A bulk of SLCC's OER offerings come in math and English classes, followed by history, geography, education, biology, business and other courses.

SLCC also has a program called 'SLCC Promise' that helps qualified students pay tuition and fees.  OER provides free textbooks.  Officials say there is a way to come to SLCC and graduate successfully, on time and leave the college debt free.
