Non-surgical methods of fat removal look like a great solution for people in this boat, but are they really effective?
Types of Non-Invasive Fat Removal
Non-surgical methods of fat removal involve killing the fat cells below the skin’s surface from the outside, and then letting the body’s immune system clear out the damaged fat cells. There are two different methods of non-surgical fat removal that are most commonly used:
Liposonix: Uses intense ultrasound to heat fat cells, which triggers the body to dispose of them.
Zeltiq: Commonly called Cool Sculpting, this method freezes fat cells, which kills them and allows the body to dispose of them.
Cons of Non-Surgical Options
Traditional liposuction is still the preferred method of fat removal for most plastic surgeons because they can achieve as much as a 90% reduction of body fat in one procedure. The results of this type of procedure can be seen within a couple of weeks, and are permanent when you take care of your body.
With non-surgical fat removal, only a small section can be treated at a time, resulting in removal of about 25% of body fat. It can take anywhere between six weeks and three months to see the final results because you have to wait for the body to clear the fat cells. It’s more difficult to measure results this way, and may result in needed follow-up procedures.
Pros of Non-Surgical Options
Non-invasive fat removal techniques can be the right fit for some people. The biggest benefit is that it allows you to avoid surgery, and has a less intensive recovery than traditional liposuction. When targeting a smaller area, such as the midsection or “love handles,” non-surgical methods can be just enough to get the desired results. These methods are also less expensive than traditional liposuction.
