Easing Depression for Yourself and Loved Ones

The sad news about Robin Williams death this week has made a saddening impact on the entire entertainment community, and on everyone else as well. I’ve heard a lot of people talking about it, and I think one of the most unsettling things about this situation is that someone who was seemingly so upbeat, and who was so loved by so many people, was feeling so desperately sad. Depression is a serious disease that robs people of their happiness, health, and vitality. Knowing how to help loved ones who are struggling with this disorder can help to save lives.

Get Educated

If you or a loved one is suffering from depression, the best thing you can do is to get all the facts on this disorder and how to manage it. Learn what the warning signs are, how to alleviate it, and all about the treatment options. Understanding the symptoms and triggers of the disorder helps you to maintain more even ground.

Offer to Help

Depression can be very overwhelming, and even seemingly easy daily tasks can just feel like too much on a bad day. You can lend your support to a loved one with depression by helping out with kids, catching up on chores around the house, and just being a listening ear. Helping out with the practical things can really ease the burden of depression. Be open and up-front with your loved one. Ask them candidly what they need, and be willing to help them out.

Ask for Help

Just like you wouldn’t try to treat diabetes on your own, you need professional help when dealing with depression. Encourage your loved one to see a Dr. and/or a mental health professional for help managing this disorder. Enlist the help of your other friends and family members as well to lend extra support.

Take Care of Yourself

Mental illnesses like depression have a way of damaging not only the person suffering from the disorder, but everyone who’s close to them as well. You can’t help your loved one to get better if you don’t take care of yourself. Don’t let the situation wear you down. Take a time out and do something fun to keep stress from building. Spend time with friends, get in a work out, and get plenty of rest. Maintaining your own health is the only way you can be helpful to others.
