It is the first Winter Storm Warning and Winter Weather Advisory of the season for Salt Lake City and the Wasatch Front.
Going back to 2005, this is the latest in the year that an Winter Weather Advisory for snow has been issued for Salt Lake City. Normally that happens by about November 11th. It is the fact that this storm will deliver its punch around afternoon commute time is the biggest reason an advisory was issued.
There will be a period of heavy snow here in Salt Lake City during Wednesday afternoon, then it will turn more showery at night. The storm moves southward and gets stronger south of Nephi.
After sunset, it plunges West Central and Southwest Utah into heavy snow that will last most of the night.

You can see the areas under winter storm warnings in West Central and Southwest Utah, including the Mountains. The Warning begins at 4p.m. and continues through Thursday at 4 p.m. Advisories for snow are in effect elsewhere over much of Utah, Idaho, Nevada and Colorado.
Snow total estimates
Generally, 1-3 inches will fall along the Wasatch Front, with up to 5 inches on the Benches. In the Mountains, 7 to 14 inches will fall. Heavy snow along the I-15 Corridor will reach between 4 and 8 inches later in the day, with locally higher amounts over the passes.
Making Travel Plans, Here is Your Outlook The storm arrives Wednesday morning in Nevada and far Northern Utah. By midday it arrives in Salt Lake City, then moves south along the I-15 Corridor in the afternoon and evening. The heaviest snow will be in the Mountains, especially the Central and Southwest Mountains, and the adjacent Valleys. The storm will also drop some snow in Eastern Utah during late tonight and throughout the day on Thursday...even some snow will fall at Lake Powell and near and around St. George, mainly above 3,000 feet.
