TRAX train and pickup collide in West Valley

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah (ABC4 News) -- Police responded to the scene Saturday evening of a collision between a TRAX train and pickup truck in West Valley City.
SALT LAKE CITY, Utah (ABC4 News) -- Two people were taken to the hospital with serious injuries after a TRAX train collided with a pickup truck Saturday night.

Sgt. Trudy Cropper of the West Valley City Police Department said the 16-year-old driver of the pickup was traveling north on 2700 West when he tried to make a U-turn at the intersection with 3360 S. Just at the moment the pickup was turning around, a TRAX train running on a track parallel to 2700 West collided with the vehicle's driver side.

The driver and his 65-year-old grandmother who was in the pickup's passenger seat were both transported via ambulance with serious but non life-threatening injuries, Cropper said.

There also were 17 passengers on the northbound train, some of whom were treated and released at the scene with minor injuries. The crash shut down the northbound track of the  TRAX Green Line for about an hour and caused 10 minute delays both ways. The scene was cleared at about 9 p.m. Saturday.
