SALT LAKE CITY (ABC 4 Utah) - A Salt Lake man is in jail Monday for beating up a one year old baby boy. Salt Lake City police are investigating it as a serious case of child abuse.

"The child is still alive but has serious bodily injury," said Sgt. Robin Heiden, Salt Lake City Police Dept.

Police said 24 year old Brian Taylor beat up his girlfriend's one year old baby boy. He was left to watch the child Monday afternoon. Around 2:00 p.m. firefighters responded to a call for medical help at the child's home near 2300 South and 8th East in Salt Lake City. They took the baby to Primary Children's Hospital. When Medical staff started looking at the boy they realized something wasn't right.

"Workers up there called the police department because they thought that something was suspicious," said Heiden.

After investigators interviewed the family, they believe the boyfriend caused the injuries and officers took him to jail. Neighbors said they shocked.

"Kinda scary," said Connie Drysdale, neighbor.

"It's kind of sad," said Jason Hawke, neighbor.

"I hope it's not true. I hope maybe he just fell or something," said Gary Hadley, neighbor.

However neighbors do say lately they've heard a lot of loud arguing coming from the child's home.

"I've seen the mom of course and her just yelling and screaming matches with whomever," said Hawke.

"Just hollering at each other, it's just late at night," said Hadley.

On this night, police are hoping the baby survives.

"Hoping he pulls through. He's in pretty bad shape right now," said Heiden.

At last check, the baby suffered severe head trauma, is on life support, and is not expected to survive. Taylor is currently in the Salt Lake County Jail.
