RSL players weigh in on future of Jason Kreis

SANDY, Utah (ABC 4 Sports) - As Jason Kreis ponders his future, Real Salt Lake players sound as if they think their coach is leaving for New York.
SANDY, Utah (ABC 4 Sports) - After coming so close to its second MLS Cup, Real Salt Lake now faces an uncertain future, especially when it comes to head coach Jason Kreis.

Kreis will decide in the coming days whether to stay with RSL or accept an offer to become the new head coach of the expansion New York City FC beginning in 2015.

"If that happens, I wish him all the luck in the world," said defender Tony Beltran. "He's a fantastic man, a fantastic leader, and that's what happens with great men. They want new challenges, and when presented with that opportunity, I imagine he'd take it."

"He's the best coach in my career," said midfielder Javier Morales. "That's not going to change. But I know that you have opportunities in your life, and sometimes you have to take it."

The offers from New York FC and Real Salt Lake are believed to be similar financially, but it's the lure of the #1 market in the country which could possibly lead to opportunities in Europe that many be just too good to pass up.

"We don't want Jason to leave," said defender Chris Wingert. "But if he does, we'll be rooting for him elsewhere and be happy for him that he's making the best decision for him and his family.

If Kreis leaves, it will mark the end of an era. Once the laughing stock of MLS, Kreis elevated the franchise to a championship caliber team that has won more games than any club in MLS since 2009. But that doesn't mean the team can't maintain that same level of success.

"He's put in a foundation that we stand on now for next year if he's not here, and the year after that," said captain Kyle Beckerman. "It's just the evolution of the club."

"It's going to be very different if he leaves," added Wingert. "But does that mean that mean that we still can't win a championship? No, we have a great group here. Anytime you lose a piece of the puzzle that is that important, it's going to be extremely hard to replace. The new replacement isn't going to be the same, but it can still be successful."

"Even though Jason may not be here, we can still achieve and still do something special," said Beltran. "That's what he taught us and that's what we're here to do."
