Man accused of hate crime

SALT LAKE CITY (ABC 4 Utah) - A man was arrested for attempting to kill two African Americans.
SALT LAKE CITY (ABC 4 Utah) – An alleged knife wielding man is under arrest for a hate crime.
Friday afternoon the suspect, Frank Allen confronted two African American men who were talking outside a convenience store at 1300 South State.

“He looked scary especially with a knife in his hand,” says Maseer Ahamad, the store’s manager.

Witnesses say he grabbed his knife and starts slashing at one of the men. One witness who didn’t want to be identified says the suspect yelled "I am going to kill a n-----."

“It looks like he's trying to stab that guy with a knife,” says Ahamad.

Ahamad was inside the store while the suspect was taunting the African American man in the parking lot.
The victim got away. But at one point the suspect even came to a nearby mechanic shop and customers fled.

“They basically ran inside because the guy was coming at them with a knife,” says Mohamed Barkatle, an employee. “As soon as I saw the knife I told him he couldn't be there and he had to go and he did.”

The suspect went into the convenience store and turned in his knives to the store manager.

“I asked him to put it down and he put it down for a while and then he took it back,” says Ahamad.

The suspect went to the bathroom. Meanwhile Ahamad called police who arrested him.
Allen was booked into jail for aggravated assault and two counts of a hate crime, criminal trespass and public intoxication.
The alleged racial slurs and knife attack bothered Barkatle who is Somalian.

“Nobody should be treated differently and also it discriminates against African Americans,” he says.
