You may think that the more vitamins you take, the healthier you are -- but that is not always the case. Our guest, Dr. Johnson explains that most kids get their daily dose of vitamins in just the foods that they eat, even if they are picky. Vitamins are stored in the body for weeks at a time, which means you don't necessarily have to give your kids a balanced meal every time they sit down at the table. Dr. Johnson says you should look at your kid's meals on a weekly basis and you should be getting all of the vitamins you need in those meals; however, there are exceptions to that rule. Studies have shown that 60% of kids across the United States are deficient in Vitamin D so more attention needs to be paid in that area. For most kids, it is recommended that they get 600 units of Vitamin D per day.
Common Sources of Vitamin D:
Vitamin C is one vitamin that is consistently consumed too much. Dr. Johnson says that kids only need the vitamin C that they can get from most fruits and vegetables -- most kids do not need to take extra Vitamin C supplements beyond their daily meals. Vitamins can be toxic if taken in excess.
