What Habits Are Giving You Varicose Veins?

Are you in a profession where you sit or stand all day? Are you wearing the wrong shoes? Learn more about what contributes to vein disease
Habits and Situations that can cause Varicose Veins

What professions can cause vein disease?

Whether you’re a schoolteacher, a construction worker, a police officer, a doctor, a dentist, or any other profession standing all day can cause your legs to form varicose veins. A few suggestions to relieve your aching leg symptoms are to elevate your feet and legs whenever possible, sit when you can, avoid crossing your feet and legs, and exercise to control your weight. You can also wear support compression hose, which make it easier for blood to blow back up towards your heart.

What kinds of activities can cause varicose veins?

Some activities that require your legs to support heavier weight such as weightlifting, skiing, backpacking and repetitive motion sports like running, cycling and tennis can put a lot of stress on your leg veins… and damage the delicate valves of your vein circulation.

Again, you can elevate your legs, rest when possible and wear support hose.

What kind of shoes can affect varicose veins?

Wearing high heels can also contribute to vein disease. Your calf muscles contract less when wearing high-heeled shoes than when you’re wearing flat bottom shoes. This causes the venous blood pressure to increase and can stress the valves in your veins.

If you’re concerned about varicose veins from pregnancy, standing all day, sports activities or wearing high heels, you can call to schedule an appointment at their Sandy, Utah office for a free vein screening on Thursday, April 3rd, from 10 am to 5 pm.
