Kayden Troff from West Jordan competed against nine of the top young chess players in the United States at the 2014 U.S. Junior Closed Championship in June at the Chess Club and Scholastic Center of Saint Louis (CCSCSL). This event is the most prestigious chess tournament in the country for the nation's top chess players under the age of 21.  And, Kayden brought home the trophy!

He received the $3,000 top prize and, more importantly, an automatic invitation to the 2015 U.S. Championship, the nation's top chess event.

Troff, 16, earned the coveted grandmaster title, making him the youngest active grandmaster in the United States. In 2012, he won a gold medal at the World Youth Chess Championship in the under-14 division.

He has participated in multiple training sessions with legendary World Chess Champion Garry Kasparov and was selected to the Young Stars - Team USA program, a joint partnership between the Kasparov Chess Foundation (KCF) and the CCSCSL, which was launched in 2012 to find and train the country's top emerging chess players.

The Chess Club and Scholastic Center of Saint Louis is a non-profit, 501(c)(3) organization that is committed to making chess an important part of our community. In addition to providing a forum for the community to play tournaments and casual games, the club also offers chess improvement classes, beginner lessons and special lectures.

Recognizing the cognitive and behavioral benefits of chess, the Chess Club and Scholastic Center is committed to supporting those chess programs that already exist in area schools while encouraging the development of new in-school and after-school programs.
