Victim and driver in fatal Saturday crash identified

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah (ABC 4 Utah)- Three people are dead and one is in critical condition Saturday after a vehicle ran off I-80 near Salt Lake International Airport and rolled into a retention pond.

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah (ABC 4 Utah) -- Law enforcement continues its investigation into a crash near the Salt Lake International Airport that left three people dead and the driver in critical condition.

On Sunday, the Utah Highway Patrol released the identities of the driver, 24-year-old Jonathan Cruz from West Valley City, who is still recovering at a hospital. His passenger and girlfriend, 18-year-old Michaela Martin from Taylorsville, was killed in the crash as were two male juveniles whose identities were not released.

Investigators are screening charges against Cruz as the investigation continues. According to UHP, an airport police officer saw Cruz speeding out of a parking garage at the airport. The officer followed the vehicle as it went eastbound on Interstate 80 but just as the officer called off the chase, Cruz's Volkswagen Passat rolled into a retention pond.

Cruz was found near the car and was transported to Intermountain Medical Center with broken bones and head injuries.
