UVU Students say they protected their school and team

The WAC tournament is just two weeks away and Utah Valley University is in the spotlight for the wrong reasons with a ticket to march madness on the line.
SALT LAKE CITY (ABC 4 UTAH) -- The WAC tournament is just two weeks away and Utah Valley University is in the spotlight for the wrong reasons with a ticket to march madness on the line.

The game was a thriller.

“Super awesome, oh my gosh it was so electric” said junior Michael Jones.

“It was a big game. Biggest game of the year!” said junior Riley Bastian.

In a 66-61 overtime win for UVU fans rushed the court.

Then a New Mexico State Player, KC Ross-Miller, threw a basketball at UVU’s Holton Hunsaker.

A staff member, Tiffany Nez, says, “I always expect a fight. It’s sports. It's passionate, it's heated and I think that's what happened.”

“The clock rang we ran onto the court. They started throwing punches and you know, self defense. We had to stand up for our school and our team,” said sophomore Kyle Capener.

Nathen Northcott says he was in the middle of the melee. “When I saw red uniforms I just immediately put myself into the defensive mode and tried to stop people. That's when he was trying to get over me to where the actual punching was going on and I got shoved in the face.”

UVU released the following statement.

“The incident following Thursday’s game was unfortunate and sour endnote to an otherwise brilliant performance by both teams.”

“If any of my guys did anything that was out of line, they will be punished to the tenth degree. That may affect wins and losses but they need to learn some life lessons after something like that,” said New Mexico State University Head Coach Marvin Menzies.

Miller-Ross was suspended following the game.

The Western Athletic Conference is investigating what happened. More suspensions may come down.
