Utah students learn about guns and hunting at expo

SALT LAKE CITY (ABC 4 News)- Utah students traded in the pencils and paper Thursday for a little target practice.
SALT LAKE CITY (ABC 4 News)- Utah students traded in the pencils and paper Thursday for a little target practice.

Around 450 elementary and middle school students attended the Youth Wildlife Conservation Experience at the Salt Palace, put on by the Mule Deer Foundation. They learned about shooting, hunting and everything outdoors.

“Part of our mission is to recruit youth into the industry,” said Eric Tycksen, COO of the Mule Deer Foundation. “It's not a dying sport, but it's something youth should be involved with. We consider them the future hunters and future conservationists of the world. If we don't pass the baton and get them out early we feel we'll miss out on the opportunity.”

The Youth Wildlife Experience is part of a four day hunting and conservation expo that's taking place through Sunday. If you'd like more information on the expo, click here.
