EAGLE MOUNTAIN, Utah (ABC 4 Utah) -- A man died Sunday afternoon after an aircraft he was piloting crashed near the Cedar Valley Airport in Eagle Mountain.

Sgt. Cole Christensen of the Utah County Sheriff's Office identified the man as 60-year-old Jeff Knell of Salt Lake City. Christensen said Knell was an experienced pilot who was well-known at the Cedar Valley Airport.

Knell crashed at about 2:20 p.m. Sunday. Christensen said the pilot was alone in a glider-style craft that operated without an engine. Witnesses reported seeing the aircraft struggle in the air and go down south of the airport.

Deputies arrived on scene and found Knell had died.

Christensen said the sheriff's office will assist the Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board with the crash investigation.
