Thousands in district money stolen from Granger HS principal

WEST VALLEY CITY, Utah (ABC 4 Utah) – Thousands of dollars in student registration money is missing from Granger High School after being stolen from a principal’s car in Millcreek.
WEST VALLEY CITY, Utah (ABC 4 Utah) – Thousands of dollars in student registration money is missing from Granger High School after being stolen from a principal’s car in Millcreek.

Unified Police said Granite High School Principal Jerry Haslam reported his car was broken into on the morning of July 31. The car was parked outside Haslam’s Millcreek home near the 4600 block of Brookwood Drive.

The funds were inside a bag in the backseat of Haslam’s car, containing over $14,000 worth of cash and checks.

Ben Horsley, Spokesman for the Granite School District, said Haslam took the money home in violation of district policy, which states all deposits must be taken directly to a bank.

“He alluded to the fact that it had been a long day and he had been up for quite some time and he simply did not follow procedure in that particular case,” Horsley said.

Detective Jared Richardson said police are trying to figure out if the incident was a targeted burglary.

“The vehicle was parked outside and the suspects just walked up and broke the back window, reached in and grabbed what was easiest to grab,” Richardson said.

Richardson said no one has tried to the use the stolen checks, but the cash is likely gone.

Horsley said the district will make up for the lost funds and not hold parents responsible for the stolen money. He also said the district took administrative corrective action against Haslam.

“He remains the principal at Granger High School,” Horsley said. “He remains one of our great instructional leaders, but he has been disciplined with respect to this particular situation.”

Anyone with information on the burglary is asked to call the Unified Police Department.
