OREM, Utah (ABC4 Utah) - Some Utah school teachers took time out of their summer vacation to get iPads for special needs students.

Education experts say several studies have shown that sometimes all it takes is a touch or a swipe to keep kids learning, especially kids with special needs.

"iPads are amazing technology devices to help teach children that have special needs... their multi-sensory capabilities, the ability to teach through sight, through touch, and through hearing." said Mark Leck.

For that reason, Leck, the president of the United Angels Foundation wants iPads in classrooms across the state.  He said, it is possible with a new grant called "iPads 4 Angels."

Angela Grant, a special education teacher at Santaquin Elementary just applied for a grant. She said, in her classroom iPads have made miracles.

"It's a huge benefit to students and especially students with special needs who struggle in so many aspects," she said.

Take this for example.  Craig said after trying just about everything, she introduced a struggling student to a reading app for kids.  In no time at all, her reading level went up by an entire grade.

"For her that was a huge success because she had been on a plateau for quite some time reading on the same level for almost a year," Craig said.

Now, she wants the same for other students.

"It would be a huge thing for them to have access to his technology."

Right now Utah teachers have requested almost 75 tablets through "iPads 4 Angels."

Leck said it is his mission to make sure they get what they need.

"Our real intention is to try and get as many of these devices out to as many schools and classrooms as possible," he said.
