Taste of the Wasatch helps feeds Utah's hungry

SOLITUDE RESORT (ABC 4 News) - The best restaurants in Utah dished out mouth-watering cuisine Sunday as part of Taste of the Wasatch. But while the food alone is a draw for many there's a purpose behind all the pigging out-- to stamp out hunger in Utah.

“We can put an end to hunger in Utah, that's what this is all about,” said organizer Karen Zabriskie.

People in attendance bought a ticket and got to taste of more than 60 of Utah's top restaurants, resorts and breweries.

“It's 100 percent volunteer, the chefs donate their time, the restaurants donate their food,” said Zabriskie.

Proceeds help fill hungry bellies in the Beehive state through programs such Utahans against Hunger.

“It feels a little weird to have this food event that addressed hunger, but one in six Utahans experience food insecurity and this money that is raised here goes a long way in solving that problem,” said Gina Cornia, Executive Director of Utahans against Hunger.

Low-income kids got a direct benefit. The event also helps support the Utah Food Bank's Kids Cafe. “It's where kids stay after school and we send them a supper Monday through Friday, it's mostly low income children,” said Randy Halverson, Utah Food Bank.

Helping those in need may be the sweetest treat, especially for the biggest foodies of all.

“The opportunity for us as chefs to feed people that have a challenge in life is great, to take the money that we raise here and feed people across Utah is fantastic,” said Zane Holmquist, Executive Chef, Stein Eriksen.

More than 2,000 people were expected to attend Taste of the Wasatch. All the money raised stays in the state.
