Scorching weather drives people to Provo pool

PROVO, Utah (AP) - Provo officials say scorching temperatures are driving people to the Veterans Memorial Pool in the final weeks before it closes.
PROVO, Utah (AP) - Provo officials say scorching temperatures are driving people to the Veterans Memorial Pool in the final weeks before it closes.

Provo's aquatic facilities services supervisor Cathy Smits tells the Daily Herald that monthly summer attendance has been about 25,000, compared to last year when it was 20,000.

Smits says officials were not expecting attendance to be as high because there were maintenance issues with the water slides at the start of summer, and they thought the proximity of a new rec center parking lot would reduce the number of people.

The pool closes on Aug. 18 to become part of a construction area and will eventually be integrated into the recreation center, which will house more pools.
