SALT LAKE CITY, Utah (ABC 4 Utah) -Salt Lake City is nominated among the top ten best convention cities in the United States. The nomination comes from the ‘10 Best Readers' Choice" from USA Today.
"We’re very excited to be listed in USA Today's 10 Best convention cities for north America,” said Shawn Stinson, the director of communications for Visit Salt Lake.
Salt Lake City must be doing something right, because according Stinson, on average they see about 25 to 30 city wide conventions per year, bringing in thousands of visitors to spend money eating at our restaurants and visiting our attractions.
"There are a number of attributes that make Salt Lake City such an ideal meeting and convention location one is accessibility and two what we hang our hats on is service,” said Stinson.
Stinson says Salt Lake has fast become recognized as one of the most welcoming cities for conventions. However, he says competing with other cities that have convention hotels has crossed Salt Lake off the list more than once. That's why Salt Lake Mayor Ben McAdams is pushing for a bill this legislative session to build a convention hotel. The hotel would be built using private funds.
“Our convention business is a incredibly important part of our economy they come here on average they spend 900 dollars in our local economy so that is taxes flowing in to fund our schools and to fund our police and fire services that we don't have to pay,” said Mayor McAdams.
The hotel legislation is up for consideration in the senate committee meeting Friday morning and if it passes through next week it could be built as early as 2015 and open doors by 2017.
