Salt Lake City Team to Raise Alzheimer's Awareness for "The Longest Day"

People across the world and right here in Utah will come together to honor those facing Alzheimer's Disease by participating in The Longest Day. That includes a team from Ballroom Utah Dance Studio.
People across the globe will join together to honor those facing Alzheimer's disease by participating in The Longest Day® on Saturday, June 21, 2014. The Longest Day is a sunrise-to-sunset event to honor the strength, passion and endurance of those living with Alzheimer's disease and their caregivers. Teams will complete a day filled with activity to raise funds and awareness for the efforts of the Alzheimer's Association.

Held annually on the summer solstice, The Longest Day symbolizes the seemingly endless journey so many facing Alzheimer's disease are asked to endure. Participants will complete approximately 16 hours of activity ranging from running, cooking, knitting to playing bridge, to help advance Alzheimer's care, support and research.

This year, The BallroomUtah Dance Studio has created a team for The Longest Day and will be kicking off their team fundraising on Friday, June 6, 2014, with a Dance Showcase. During the Showcase, the audience is asked to participate by casting their votes with donations given to their favorite dance team. The team that receives the most donations wins first place. All the proceeds will go to the Alzheimer's Association.

Christine Schnitzer, the Team Captain for BallroomUtah Dance Studio Showcase is passionate about The Longest Day event and has a personal connection to Alzheimer's. "My mother died from complications due to Alzheimer's disease 15 years ago", says Christine, "and it was my sister, the best caregiver ever, who cared for her during that time."

Alzheimer's disease is a growing epidemic and the nation's sixth leading cause of death. More than five million Americans are living with Alzheimer's, including 28,000 here in Utah, and this number is estimated to grow to as many as 16 million by year 2050, according to the Alzheimer's Association® 2014 Alzheimer's Disease Facts & Figures report.
