PARK CITY, Utah (ABC 4 News) - Robert Redford held a press conference Thursday to announce the beginning of the 2013 Sundance Film Festival.

It's the moment celebrities, journalists and independent film makers from around the world have been waiting for.

"So you flew in from where?" asked Reporter Brian Carlson.

"Los Angeles," said Didir Allouch, French TV Network.

"Are you nervous to ask Robert a question?" Carlson asked.

"I'm feeling pretty good," said a reporter from the Digital Kitchen.

"We're trying to figure out exactly what to ask him so we don't look too foolish. That's what everyone wants to think of, the best question to ask him," said John Giansiracusa, Bangitout.com.

When Redford finally arrived, it was time to talk Sundance.

"I remember when this was simpler," said Robert Redford, Founder, Sundance Institute.

Redford told reporters he's proud of the festival's legacy of diversity.

"The festival being as diverse as it is shows all kinds of content, and that gives the audience a chance to choose," said Redford.

Sundance Institute Executive Director Keri Putnam said the festival is now in more places than its ever been.

"We have films from 32 different countries and I think this festival has always been a festival of discovery. I think we have 51 first time filmmakers out of 119 films," said Keri Putnam, Sundance Institute Executive Director.

Festival Director John Cooper said he just wants to get this year going.

"I just want to get this thing started. I feel like I'm sitting on a powder keg of talent that's about to really explode," said John Cooper, Sundance Film Festival Director.

With that modest introduction, the brains behind Sundance put the festival underway.

The Sundance Film Festival is expected to last until January 27th.
