It marks the seventh straight year Utah has led the list.
The report from the Corporation for National and Community Service shows that 41 percent of Utahns volunteered in 2011. That's a higher percentage than any other state and well above the national average of 27 percent.
Idaho, Iowa, Minnesota and South Dakota round out the top five.
Among metro areas, Salt Lake City ranks fourth. The Minneapolis -St. Paul-Bloomington area leads all metro cities with 37 percent of residents volunteering.
The report is based on information from a monthly survey of 60,000 households done by the U.S. Census Bureau.
