BOUNTIFUL, Utah (ABC 4 Utah) - Drowning takes the top spot for the number one cause of death for people during summer months, but one rec center is trying to change that.

The South Davis Recreational Center is trying to break a Guinness World Record--for having the largest swim class in history.

The goal is to combat the drowning rate.

"What we do, we collaborate with this organization, it's called world's largest swim lesson and every year we are a host location for many all around the world who try to break this world record to teach people swimming lessons save lives,” said Cindy Hunt, aquatics program manager.

Hunt says it's important for both children and adults to know how to respond in an emergency situation especially in the water.

Ninety-five people showed up for Friday’s swim lesson to a much larger effort.
