The arrest came from an investigation that began on May 30th, after the alleged victim reported a sexual assault that night.
According to SLCPD Sgt. Shawn Josephson, the 18-year-old victim went to a residence with some friends on the night of May 30th, the same night that 23-year-old Brian Newton was also in attendance with a group of his friends.
During the evening, Josephson said that the victim and Newton left the party to pick up some food, but that Newton pulled over into a business parking lot along the way, where he pulled a gun on the victim and forced her engage in sexual activity with him.
After the alleged assault, Josephson said Newton began to drive back to the party and stopped at an intersection, where the victim was able to jump out and run away, having since put her clothes back on.
Josephson said the victim was able to elude Newton and return to her own home, where she called police.
Over the next few weeks, Josephson said investigators were able to verify the victim's story and track down Newton to a residence at 621 East 700 South late Monday night.
Josephson said the SWAT team was called in as a precaution due to the gun that was used during the alleged incident, but that Newton gave up peaceably when served with a warrant.
Newton faces Rape, Aggravated Kidnapping, Aggravated Assault and Sodomy charges.
