SALT LAKE CITY, UTAH (ABC 4 UTAH) - The Outdoor Retailer expo kicked off Wednesday morning at the Salt Palace Convention Center. The annual expo has been taking place for 16 years and brings thousands of retailers to downtown Salt Lake City.
Paul Fish traveled from Spokane Washington for his company Mountain Gear, and looks forward to finding new products to set his company aside from competitors. He says “Outdoor retail is essential to my company. Coming to this show each year and getting to see what's new and getting to meet with our vendors is essential to our continued success.”
Fish goes on to say between him and eight others he traveled with they meet with 100 vendors. “We’ll look at everybody from the big vendors like Northface and then go running around trying to find someone new,” says Fish.
10,000 retailers are expected at this week's event. Each one checking out 1300 different exhibitors' latest and greatest items for the upcoming year. One retailer from Wyoming says "We probably purchase a half a million to a million dollars in goods for our resort based on this show." Another retailer says “It's one of those must have places to hit for me and my company.”
Looking for top of the line products Jim Erwin says coming to this show is a must for his tactical gear company in New Jersey. “Where we bring value is knowing the products, what's new and being able to relay that to our customer base and if your not here getting that information your not competitive in my book,” says Erwin.
The outdoor retailer comes to Utah twice a year. They will be back in January to show off their winter items.
