David Wise, a Halfpipe skier who trains in Utah, is a front-runner for the Inaugural Men's Ski Halfpipe Olympic event in Sochi on Tuesday February 18.

David competes on his own brand of skis made here in Utah by 4FRNT skis. Matt Sterbenz is the owner of 4 FRNT skis and came on Midday to tell us more about halfpipe skiing.

Sterbenz says 4FRNT skis are unique because they are an extension of an athlete's ability and should be custom designed for how he or she performs.  A full-on pipe ski features a traditional camber and asymmetric, directional shape for pop and flex with consistency and the necessary twin tip.  The semi-cap construction keeps the weight manageable while increasing durability.  Because the pipe can beat out a beating, the ski switch edge-to-edge in a flash, while the wide side-cut radius means it wont' flutter or flip-flop during high-speed entries.

4FRNT provides a platform for professional riders to succeed in their sport through product design, competition, and sponsorship.  4FRNT Skis began in 2002 during a period when freeskiing was becoming established yet the products on the market struggled for direction.  Their mission was to attract the sports' best riders, provide a platform for them to design signature products and as a result progress the state of freeskiing.

Freestyle skiing in the halfpipe will make its Olympic debut in Sochi on Tuesday February 18. David is a formidable contender for the Gold Medal having already placed first at the X-Games in December 2013 as well as the U.S. Freeskiing Grand Prix in Park City and the FIS Halfpipe World Championship. Wise is the rare halfpipe skier who can do the switch double cork, skiing backward into a kaleidoscopic double flip and can perform back-to-back double corks - one spinning to his left, one to his right.
