WASHINGTON (ABC 4 Utah) - First Lady Michelle Obama, Salt Lake City mayor, Ralph Becker and leaders from more than 80 cities have committed to the cause.

The First Lady held an event at the White House where she announced the new plan.

Mayor Ralph Becker was there. He introduced the VA’s acting secretary, Sloan Gibson to the crowd.

“We demonstrated in the past our ability to tackle tough challenges. We've automated claims processing, cleared half the backlog and we're on our way to eliminating veteran homelessness,” said Gibson.

“We have made great progress over the past few years because of leaders like you who refuse to accept veteran homelessness as a fact of life but now we have to finish the job once and for all,” said Mrs. Obama.

The First Lady went on to say once a veteran comes home kissing the ground. It's unacceptable that he or she should ever have to sleep on it.
