Miss Utah's fumble during Miss USA makes national headlines

Miss Connecticut may have won the title, but the headlines from the Miss USA contest are all about Miss Utah's fumble.
SALT LAKE CITY, Utah (ABC 4 Utah) - Miss Connecticut may have won the title, but the headlines from the Miss USA contest are all about Miss Utah's fumble. It happened during the Q&A when Utah’s Marissa Powell gave a rambling incoherent answer to a question about income inequality.

Good things Utah's Gretchen Jensen is no stranger to the competition and has been in Powell’s shoes, having won Miss USA in years past. "I don't think she was thinking about the answer but thinking about how to answer it. So, she kind of got hung up right there. In my opinion I think she could have won. If that top 5 question wasn't the way it was,” says Jensen.

The former Miss USA says she spoke with Powell the day she left for the pageant and she's articulate. Jensen says there is no right or wrong answer when facing these questions but rather believing in your answer.

When asked if Jensen thought people are being too harsh, she replied. Do you think people are being too harsh? She replied “You know what here's the deal, get on stage in that element, in that environment, when you've made it that far you react differently you think differently.”

As for the public's opinion ABC 4 Utah hit the streets to get some reaction. Lauren Anderson tells us “You're representing the whole state and everybody in it. You could have at least done a little more practice or studying on what kind of questions there going to ask and be a little prepared with you answer.”

Despite social media and public opinion Jensen says people should cut the girl some slack and look at the bigger picture. She still finished third, and that says a lot. "I really think we need to look at her overall how she did and we should be super proud of her,” says Jensen.
