Macy's at Fashion Place Mall closing for good

After Sunday Macy's at Fashion Place Mall in Murray is closing along with five other Macy's stores across the nation.
MURRAY, Utah (ABC 4 Utah) - A major retail store in Utah is shutting its doors for good. After Sunday Macy's at Fashion Place Mall in Murray is closing along with five other Macy's stores across the nation.

“I'm really sad, I've been shopping at Macy's for years I remember going to New York when I was a young girl shopping there and I've really enjoyed them here in Utah,” said Marilee Guinan a regular customer. Guinan has purchased countless shoes and clothes from Macy's since they opened their doors at Fashion Place Mall in 1988. So, hearing the retail giant would be getting rid of five locations across the country including her go to spot is a shock to her.

"I love Nordstrom I love Dillard’s too, but I've always had an affinity for Macy's. I’ve always found a lot of shoes I like their clothing and so I'm sure I will find a way to spend the money but it’s so sudden,” said Guinan.

It was only Wednesday Macy's made the announcement and Thursday they told ABC 4 Utah it's just part of running a healthy up to date retail store. They say the Macy's at fashion has expired their lease and is among the smallest locations in the country.“If you look at the Cottonwood location down the road that's 200,000 square feet compared to the 26,000 at Murray and given the proximity of Cottonwood we believe that's able to serve the customers in that area,” said Macy’s spokesman Jim Sluzewski.

Macy's says they are working to find other positions within the company for the 42 employees impacted at Fashion Place mall or offer severance packages to them. They also say despite closing five stores they will be opening 8 more this year across the country.

Fashion Place is not commenting on losing the major retailer, but they do say they will be announcing their plans on what to do with the empty space in the next few days.
