Kim Johnson - The Sandlot comes alive in SLC

Salt Lake City got a perfect blend of Americana and nostalgia this weekend. As part of the 20th anniversary of THE SANDLOT, fans attending the Salt Lake Bees game Friday and Saturday night got a chance to meet the part of the cast of the movie and get a special screening afterwards.

I couldn’t think of a better way to spend a hot July night. First, sitting back and taking in a ball game with our fellow Utahns and then getting to meet the crew of one of my favorite childhood movies. I couldn’t get over how much “Ham” hasn’t changed! He looks exactly the same! I was disappointed my lifelong crush Michael Vitar, known as “Benny” in the film, was not in attendance. He apparently is firefighter now—which let’s be honest ladies, only makes him hotter!

In all, six cast members returned to Utah for this weekend’s celebration. Marty York, who played “Yeah-Yeah”, Patrick Renna “Ham”, Victor Dimmattia “Timmy”, Shane Obedzinski “Repeat”, Daniel Zacapa “police chief” and Chauncey Leopardi “Squints” all took time to meet with Bees fans and sign DVDs.

I loved seeing shots of the Wasatch and Salt Lake City on the big screen during the showing. Many Utah families found a spot on the field, cuddled up on blankets and watched as their hometown played out in a classic family flick. I wonder if some of the little ones likely watching THE SANDLOT for the first time will grow to love it as much as their parents have over the years.
