The Big Cottonwood Half Marathon by Vigor Utah is just a couple days away and I have no idea what to expect. Sure, I've done plenty of half marathons, but not mostly all of the 13.1 miles downhill! Elevation starts at 7700 feet and ends at 4700. For the non-runners reading this you might be thinking the downhill will make running a breeze. Don't get me wrong, if I had to chose, I'd take downhill vs. uphill any day. But I can only imagine what it will do to my quads the next day since those muscles will be working over drive. Should be interesting.
Vigor Utah is putting on this race. It's only the second year but it seems like it's very well organized. Plus you have to love a race that provides free coffee or hot chocolate at the start. And it sounds like us runners will need a hot beverage. It's supposed to be a brisk 39 degrees when we all walk to the start at 5:30 am... remember this is up the canyon. So if the downhill part doesn't make you run fast... trying to stay warm certainly will.
If you are interested in some trail running this summer, Vigor Utah has some upcoming opportunities. The Solitude Mountain Resort Trail Series takes place June 8, July 13 and August 17. Distances will be 3, 5 and 8 miles. Registration can be found here.
