Is your plastic surgeon certified?

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah (ABC 4 News) - A few billboards are raising eyebrows across the Wasatch Front. They're reminders from the Utah Plastic Surgery Society to do your research before you go under the knife.
SALT LAKE CITY, Utah (ABC 4 News) - A few billboards are raising eyebrows across the Wasatch Front. They're reminders from the Utah Plastic Surgery Society to do your research before you go under the knife.

"For the last several years we've noticed an increase in the number of patients coming into our offices who have had plastic surgery procedures performed by people who are not specifically trained in plastic surgery, nor are they board certified," said plastic surgeon Grant Fairbanks.

A dentist doing breast augmentation? An ob-gyn doing lipo? Dr. Fairbanks says, it happens.

"One of the reasons we think this is happening is because they want to do a medical procedure that will be a cash paying procedure, and when insurance reimbursements are going down, other physicians are trying to find ways to make some money," Fairbanks said.

He said these doctors are not just doing cosmetic procedures, some of them are doing reconstructive surgeries without proper training as well, and there are risks.

"A lot of these doctors will go to a cosmetic boot camp, learn the procedures, come back on Monday morning, and they're doing them," Fairbanks said.

The Utah Plastic Surgery Society did a survey and learned 90% of people want a board certified plastic surgeon for their procedures, but they don't always get them.

"Actually a lot of these people go to these physicians believing they are plastic surgeons," he said.

Fairbanks says many people think because a doctor is advertising a cosmetic procedure, they're plastic surgeons. That's not always the case, so Fairbanks says, do your research, make sure your doctor is board certified.
