Iron County K9 Injured in the Line of Duty

Cedar City, Utah (ABC 4 News)- A K9 was injured in the line of duty last night.
Cedar City, Utah (ABC 4 News)- A K9 was injured in the line of duty yesterday afternoon.

The Iron County sheriffs office reported finding a vehicle of a suicidal subject near the water tower off of Nichols Canyon Road in Cedar City just after 4pm. 

The man, Merrill Orlando Rust, refused to listen to police officers, shot a gun into the air and ran deep into the foothills of Cedar City according to police.  That is when K9 Pakjo was released found the man and attacked. 

During the attack Rust injured the dog to the extent that the dog had to be rushed to an emergency trauma center in Las Vegas for Emergency Surgery. At this time the dogs prognosis is unknown according to a press released by the Iron County sheriffs office. 

Rust was arrested for Possession of Marijuana, Possession of Drug Paraphernalia, Possession of a Dangerous Weapon by a Restricted Person, Failure to stop at the Command of a Police Officer and Causing Injury to a Police Service Animal.
