I like to be in tip-top mental shape each day as I work alongside some of Utah’s top medical professionals, but that’s not always easy with my hectic schedule. I’ve found that my ability to concentrate all day, and to fight off that late afternoon slump, depends a lot upon what kinds of food I’ve included on the day’s menu. Including a rich supply of brain boosting foods can keep you mentally sharp, and give you the energy you need to be productive all day long. Here are some of my favorite brain boosting foods:
Berries: These colorful little powerhouses are packed with antioxidants, which keep the entire body free from impurities and running at top efficiency. Antioxidants also have anti-aging properties that improve the health of your skin and other tissues. I like to include them in my yogurt, smoothies, and oatmeal.
Nuts: Studies have shown that people who get a healthy dose of nuts on the reg have better cognitive function. The healthy fats and other nutrients in nuts are just what your brain needs for repair and regeneration. Nuts are the perfect afternoon snack because just a handful can curb your appetite for hours.
Salmon: This and other types of fatty fish contain Omega-3 fatty acids, which support brain function and growth. Add some grilled salmon to your salad at lunch to help you get through the long afternoon. Omega-3 also reduces the risk of heart disease, so you’ll be extending your cardiovascular health as well.
Other brain boosting foods include lentils, olive oil and coffee. When the days are long and you’ve got a lot on your plate, remember to include these foods for more mental energy.
