Glenn Willey-Winter Is Here...Kinda

Winter is here! Yes, I know it's in the 50s but winter is really here! Now I know what you're thinking, "Glenn, the solstice is still more than 2 weeks away." That's true but "meteorological winter" begins December 1st. Meteorological winter is December through February or climatologically speaking the 3 coldest months of the year. Our climate records for "winter" are based on "meteorological winter" and not from when the winter solstice begins.

The commercial used to say, "it's not nice to fool Mother Nature" but today she's fooling us again with temperatures more than 10 degrees above normal and plenty of sunshine. So the next question is, when does it start to feel like winter around here? Before Thanksgiving a strong winter storm dropped several inches of snow on the Salt Lake Valley floor and in the mountains. It looked like we were off and running to a great ski season as many resorts rushed to open and capitalize on the early shot of snow. The only problem is we've had very little snow since and temperatures have warmed up.

In the short term, we're expecting colder air for the weekend. There are also a few opportunities for more snow this week. It would be hard to imagine not beating last year's pathetic snowfall numbers but at this rate anything is possible.
