Getting Some Healthy R&R

Getting Some Healthy R&R

Vacationing may feel like a selfish indulgence to some, but it's actually an important part of caring for your health!

Summer is winding down as the kids head back to school, and things begin to pick back up at the office. Hopefully you had a nice relaxing vacation over the summer, but if you didn’t, you’d better squeeze one in now before the weather turns cold. Even if it’s just for a weekend, taking a break from the day-to-day will give you a boost in mental, physical and emotional health.

Health and Healing

Studies have shown that getting extended periods of rest a couple times a year allow the body to rejuvenate, recharge and heal. Reducing stress levels for a few days at a time like you do on a vacation is just what your body and mind need to reset. People who are able to vacation regularly show decreased risk of heart disease, breast cancer, depression, and other disorders. Your body needs a break every once in a while, especially from stress, and a vacation is the way to get one.

Getting Creative Juices Flowing

For those who work in creative fields, taking a break is helpful on a whole other level. Besides relieving stress, taking some time away from the daily pressures of work allows you to gain new perspective, which can lead to some innovative approaches to the same old stuff. Taking a break from a project will actually allow your brain to rejuvenate, which can lead to a rush of new ideas. Many creative people will tell you that they have their best ideas when they’re not trying to come up with them.

Increasing Productivity and Morale

It doesn’t matter how much you love your job, everyone feels burned out sometimes. Call center employees can’t stand the thought of taking another call, nurses feel like they’re drowning in paperwork, and stay-at-home moms are counting the minutes until bedtime. Taking a vacation allows you to put aside the monotony of life for a while, and then take a fresh stab at it when you get back. Many people say that they feel more positive about their job, and more productive following a vacation. Tourism also boosts the worldwide economy, so you’ll be helping others as you help yourself.
