Elderly woman found dead in home after a routine traffic stop

Police are on the hunt for a person of interest that may have the answers to the murder and house fire of an elderly woman.
MURRAY (ABC 4 UTAH) – Police are on the hunt for a person of interest that may have the answers to the murder and house fire of an elderly woman.

Police say 85-year-old Shirley Sharp was found dead while her house was on fire.

Earlier Saturday morning Utah Transit Authority pulled over a man during a routine traffic stop. The stop happened on 75 W. 5300 South around 6 a.m. Police say he was acting odd when they confronted him.

“Soon as I made a left I went ‘oh my god I’m busted,’” said the person of interest.

The man then took off almost hitting the officer. He is described as a 50-year-old white male with a grey beard. He was last seen wearing a grey jacket, blue jeans, and orange shirt or vest.

Police tracked down the owner of the car by the license plate. It was registered to Sharps home on E. Winchester Street.

“Officers got here 10-15 minutes later,” said Murray Police Officer Kenny Bass.

That’s when the officers smelled and saw smoke coming from the home. Firefighters entered the house to put the fire out, only to find Shirley dead.

Sharp was well known where she lived.

“Super nice lady, I see her walking back and forth to church all the time, just a friendly lady,” said neighbor Kevin Larsen.

Shirley loved the out doors and when the weather was nice you could find her in her garden.

“Awesome lady, I hate to hear this happen to someone’s grandma or mom. Our condolences are with the family right now and prayers are with them,” Larsen added.

The neighborhood was shocked to hear Shirley was murdered in her home.

“It’s kind of surprising that no one saw it. Simply because there are so many people that go through here,” said neighbor Ty Adams.

Police say it’s a triple threat. Stolen car, fire, and murder and there is only one person that may have the key to solve this Murray mystery.
