DO-IT-YOURSELF HAIR COLORING TIPS

Take years off of your appearance and save a little money by coloring your hair at home.

Coloring your hair not only gives you a chance to make a fun change, it can also  take years off of your appearance. A good dye job will cover your grays, brighten your skin tone, and bring out the sparkle in your eyes, but it can also cost an arm and a leg. You can get a high-dollar, youthful dye job from the comfort of your own home, as long as you follow a few simple tips.

The Right Tools for the Job

If you want to be successful at coloring your own hair, you need to arm yourself with the same supplies the pros use. Skip the bottle and opt for using a paintbrush that is 1.5-2” wide to apply the dye. You’ll also need a rattail comb to part your hair into sections and to comb the dye evenly through your hair. You’ll need a bowl to mix the dye in, and a couple of dark towels to protect your clothing and to clean up your mess. Basic hair clips will help you to keep your hair sectioned off while you’re working on it. Your best tool to have on hand will be your best friend, since it’s always easier to get an even coloring if you have help from someone else.

Testing 1-2-3

Before you apply a new color to your whole head, test it out on a small strand on the inner side of your hair to make sure it’s coming out how you expected. Try the color for half the recommended time first, and then if you want it darker, reapply it for the full recommended time.

For Best Results

Now that you’re ready to go, here are a few tips to help you get that upscale salon look:

  • Lighting: Color your hair using as much natural light as possible, since this is the best way to gauge color.

  • Don’t Overdo It:  Choose a shade that is only a few shades off from your natural color at the most, since making drastic changes can be a little harder to control if you’re inexperienced.

  • Condition: Use a deep conditioner immediately following your coloring, and once a week following to keep your hair nourished and vibrant.
