Cowboys with a Cause

SALT LAKE CITY (ABC 4 Utah) – Sporting lime green shirts and blinking cowboy hats it's hard to miss Matthew Prisco and his friend, Bryan Gallagher and that's the point.

"We're trying to start a discussion about the stigma and ultimately we're trying to break down any perceived stigma about mental illness and treat it just like any other physical illness," says Prisco.

To start that discussion the Blinking Cowboys are hitting all fifty states and attending country music festivals.

"Talking to people and never knowing who you are going to run into that has it and how close it is to them, so it's never as far off as you think it might be," says Gallagher.

Talking about an issue that hits close to home for the Blinking Cowboys. About four years ago Prisco's mother killed his father. She was found not guilty by reason of mental disease.

Now Prisco is trying to turn tragedy into triumph...

"It's something that needs to be more public, that people need to be able to talk about and I know when we were dealing with my mothers illness it was something we felt stigmatized by," says Prisco.

These two cowboys are so passionate about the cause they quit their jobs in hopes of making a difference, by stomping out the stigma.

"I think you should always do what you are passionate about and as long as you are doing it for the right reasons I think you can never go wrong," says Gallagher.

The Blinking Cowboys left New York in June and hope to return September 7th. They are almost half way, Utah marks the 24th state on their journey.
