He slipped beneaththe water earlier in the day around 3:00 p.m. as a crowd watched him struggle for breath and then disappear into the murky water below.
“There was screaming and people were gathered around the whole area,” Sonia Khaled recalled. She was swimming in the water about 100 yards from the victim when slipped beneath the surface.
The Weber County Sheriff’s Department is investigating the drowning as an accident.
Several people along the beach say the victim and his friends were intoxicated, but the Weber County Sheriff’s Department will not comment on these allegations.
“All of a sudden you just see everybody like pile up like over by the same area by the beach,” said witness, Karen Valdez.
Cpl. Mark Horton of the Weber County Sheriff’s Department says the 26-year-old victim was in a non-designated area of the Resevoir between 20 and 40 feet deep when he went down.
“The friend did watch him struggle. The friend did try to get to his point to help him, but couldn’t get there in time,” Horton said.
The victim slipped under the water and never resurfaced. Search and Rescue crews immediately took boats to the water as divers searched the murky depths below.
“The water today was pretty like pretty deep like you could go a little way into it and it would be already up to here (she points to her neck),” Valdez said.
The mood was somber at the Pineview Reservoir Sunday evening as family and friends talked about the man who lost his life while he was trying to cool off on a hot day.
“That is so sad. It makes me want to cry. I mean he’s 26-years-old. He’s got his whole life ahead of him,” said Khaled.
