With a roaring engine and a shiny motorcycle the Utah Jazz Bear drove into Salt Lake's Leonardo Museum today. Dan Farr, the co-founder of Salt Lake Comic Con rode behind him. It was a grand entrance for a major announcement.
"Based on the success that we've seen and the fan response," Farr said. "This next year, we're actually going to do two events."
The reason is clear. Salt Lake City's first Comic Con in September sent more than 75 thousand people to the Salt Palace, making it Utah's largest convention ever. The event also broke records as Comic Con's largest debut event in history. After only one weekend, it is already the fourth most popular Comic Con in the Country.
It is no surprise that 2014 will be even bigger, with a new event in April.
"We're calling it the Fan X Comic Con, or fan experience," Farr said.
It will be a separate convention for the fans, including those who aren't even into comics.
After announcing Fan X Farr said, "We're expecting now over 100 thousand people at this next event in April."
Big names are already on board. Chandler Riggs and Norman Reedus from "The Walking Dead" have signed on. Organizers are also expecting Brent Spiner from "Star Trek: The Next Generation," Adam Baldwin from the show "Chuck," and Kelly Hu of X-men fame.
"I'm happy," said a fan.
Another quickly replied, "It's really exciting," after he heard the news.
Fans told ABC4 Utah they are also pumped for the second annual Comic Con next September 4th through the 6th. The event will require double the floor space, but organizers promised it will be a blast.
Fans agreed. One told ABC4 Utah "It's just good clean, family fun."
