SALT LAKE CITY, (ABC 4 Utah) – December saw a sharp rise in enrollment for insurance plans under the Affordable Care Act, but the latest numbers are still missing the mark.

Across the country 2,153,421 Americans signed up for a plan through December 28, 2013.

That’s up from 364,682 in November.

In Utah 18,633 are now signed up, compared to 1,865 in November and 357 in October.

"Once the website was fully operational people really started getting on and seeing what they qualify for and a lot of people liked what they ended up finding out. So, we're still behind, but we are catching up quickly to where we should be," said Take Care Utah Director, Randal Serr.

The Obama Administration projected 3.3 million people across the country would sign up through December.

In Utah the projection was 26,790.

Over the next three months the goal is 7,000,000 Americans and 57,000 Utahns.

"Most people, everything that we are seeing says that people are waiting until March to make that final decision," said Serr.

The final day to sign up for insurance and avoid the fine is March 31, 2014, the last day of open enrollment.
