On Wednesday, May 14, 2014, Abigail Mindes, 6, from West Jordan was surprised by her family and friends to learn she was selected to attend the 2014 FIFA World Cup™ this June as one of McDonald's 2014 Player Escorts.

Abigail, a first grader at the McGillis School in Salt Lake, thought she was stopping by the Sugar House McDonald's for a quick snack before her ice skating practice, but instead, was happily greeted by Ronald McDonald, Real Salt Lake's Leo the Lion and several of her classmates, family and friends at a special announcement party held in her honor.

Abigail is one of 26 lucky kids, ages 6 to 10, selected from across the nation to attend the 2014 FIFA World Cup™ in Brazil and escort a U.S. Men's National Soccer Team player onto the field before a match in June.

Abigail's father, Jeremy, entered the sweepstakes in the hope of surprising his daughter and her mother, Cintia, with the exciting news of a trip to Brazil.

Along with her mother Cintia, Abigail will not only represent Utah on a four-night, five-day trip to the World Cup games, but she will be able to visit family she hasn't seen in five years and celebrate her great grandmother's 90th birthday!  Her first stop will be Rio de Janeiro on June 18, and then off to the match city of Manaus, which happens to be her mother's hometown, to escort a U.S. Men's National Team player onto the field for USA vs. Portugal, June 22.

Abigail also received also a $1,000 grant from McDonald's to give to a local soccer organization of her choice. Her family chose to give it to the Utah Youth Soccer Association's Field Grant Program. This program matches funds raised by Utah Youth Soccer clubs to purchase land for new soccer fields and complexes.

Abigail will join more than 1,400 children from around the globe to support their country's soccer heroes during the month-long tournament in Brazil, which starts June 12 and ends with the championship match on July 13.
