PROVO, Utah (ABC 4 Sports) - The NCAA has approved a waiver request by BYU on behalf of Notre Dame transfer Chris Badger to allow the defensive back to play this season.

The approval makes the redshirt freshman immediately eligible for competition.

Badger has been practicing with the Cougars the last few weeks, and could see immediate action this Saturday against Utah.

A native of Provo, Utah, Badger played high school football at Timpview, where he helped the T-Birds win three straight state titles. After finishing his high school career in 2009, he enrolled mid-year at Notre Dame before serving an LDS mission during the 2010-2011 seasons. He returned to Notre Dame for the 2012 season where he completed his redshirt year.

After an ilness in his family, Badger decided to transfer to BYU where he enrolled in the fall.

Badger will help a BYU secondary that was decimated by injuries. The Cougars lost starting cornerback Justin Johnson to the season with a knee injury, while Trenton Trammell is also out with a knee injury.
