VANCOUVER, B.C. (ABC4 Sports) - After a two-week break, Real Salt Lake's defense looked a little rusty in a 3-2 loss to the Vancouver Whitecaps Saturday night.
RSL falls to 10-14-5 on the year, and stays two points behind FC Dallas for the final playoff spot. But Dallas has played three fewer games than Real.
The Whitecaps opened the scoring, as Bernie Ibini and Jake Nerwinski linked up along the right flank, with the defender sending in a low cross that was turned in by Cristian Techera.
But RSL tied up the game before halftime, as defender Chris Wingert scored his first goal of the season and second of his career, when his crossing pass missed Yura Movsisyan, but fooled Whitecaps goalkeeper David Ousted and found the back of the net to level the match at the half.
Vancouver took the lead again early in the second half off a free kick, when Tim Parker's header hit the post, and the rebound trickled out to Kendall Waston, whose well-placed finish beat Nick Rimando. Reyna then added an insurance goal in the 64th minute to make it 3-1 Whitecaps.
Tony Beltran kept things interesting with a late score for RSL in the 83rd minute, his first career goal in 10 MLS seasons. But Vancouver held on for the victory.
With just five games left, RSL next hosts Portland on September 16th at Rio Tinto Stadium.
