Timpview shocks East to win 4A title, 33-28

SALT LAKE CITY (ABC 4 Sports) - The East High football team had won every game they played this season by at least 18 points. But they hadn't played a team like the defending 4A champion Timpview Thunderbirds.

Junior quarterback Britain Covey threw for 273 yards and two touchdowns, and rushed for 85 yards and two more scores as the Thunderbirds overcame an early 13-0 deficit to win the 4A title, 33-28.

Timpview (13-1) has now won back-to-back state titles, and six of the last eight championships.

"Everybody had the underdog mentality for us, but we didn't," said Covey. "We believed in ourselves all the way. We knew they were a great team and we respected them. But if you want to be a state championship team, then you have to believe you're the best in the state."

"We were the kings last year, and we're sitting on the throne again," said defensive lineman Isaiah Nacua. "I'm so proud of my team."

East jumped out to a 13-0 lead on touchdown runs by Ula Tolutau and Issac Valles. The Leopards then took a 19-7 lead after Preston Curtis scored on a 70-yard touchdown run, but East scored just one more touchdown the rest of the way.

"To our kids credit, they didn't panic," said head coach Cary Whittingham. "We knew it was going to be a long game. We knew we were here for all four quarters. Nobody panicked."

Timpview took a 27-25 lead on a 4-yard touchdown run by Covey. That was the first time East had trailed in the second half of a game all season long.

After East reclaimed the lead on a 19-yard field goal by Isaac Anthony, Covey scored on a 9-yard touchdown with three minutes to play to give Timpview a 33-28 lead.

The Timpview defense held the high-powered East offense without a touchdown for the entire second half. Appropriately enough, Gabriel Reid ultimately ended the game by sacking Valles on 4th down from midfield.

"That's the definition of Timpview right here," said Covey when asked what it means to win another championship. "We're on top again and it's nice."
